The summer of 1862 was a time of need for the Union. After the bad defeat of the Union army at 2nd Bull Run President Lincoln made another call for Union volunteers. The men of Iowa responded once again as they had done earlier that year and in 1861. The regiment as a whole had a large number of married men which is consistent with later regiments. Many of these men at the start of the war did not want to leave their families to fight. Seeing that the Union needed all to fight they left the comforts of home to fight for their country. The officers also had been with other Iowa regiments so these men on many levels had the experience to lead. The regiment was first drilled in the Mississippi river town of Dubuque Iowa.(the regiment was described as being well drilled) After being named the 32nd and the ten companies being designated they headed south to Missouri. Once in Missouri the regiment was split. Companies A, D, F and G were designated to the Cape Girardeau area where they participated in the pursuit of Marmaduke in late April and early May.
Company A was raised out of Webster County, which is located in north central Iowa. The largest town in Webster County is Webster City. Many of these men were farmers and as true with many Iowans of the time most were born out of state. A large number of these men were born in the state of Ohio. The general appearance of the regiment should be of one in the field. Even though these men spent time in garrison they were being shifted from one spot to the next. The men were dirty in appearance and as re-enactors we should reflect that.
For Marmaduke’s Raid we are going to recreate one company of the 32nd Iowa. The company that we have chosen is companies A D & F. We will have an active commissary, we will maintain and construct a fort, maintain an outpost, make patrols, interact with the citizens of the area, and a sutler.
